Training Days: Caring for your Books and Bound Collections

Two training days, run by Monika Stokowiec, were held on the 2nd and 3rd November in Penzance and Liskeard for staff and volunteers from Cornwall's museums and archives. These sessions were developed out of discussions with Jo Warburton, Cornwall's Museums Development Manager and Tamsin Mallet from the Cornish Archive Network.  Both days were fully booked so we hope to run an additional day in January at Geevor Tin Mine Museum. we are most grateful to the Preservation Advisory Centre who sent us for free two boxes of Preservation leaflets for participants http://www.bl.uk/blpac/

Introducing Clare Goulbourn

Clare is our second HLF Skills for the Future funded intern and has recently completed two years of post graduate training in book conservation at West Dean. Previously, Clare trained  in computer animation and visualisation and worked for six years as a lighting technical director in the private sector (including a Harry Potter movie!).  This previous experience as a freelancer stands Clare in good stead as she would like to eventually set up her own conservation practice.

Anyone interested in finding out about the conservation courses at West Dean can access information from the website -

Conservation of a rolled, varnished, map of the never completed Polbroke Canal, for Bodmin Town Museum

This is a project was undertaken by Monika Stokowiec, as part of the HLF sponsored Skills for the Future internship programme. All conservation projects have to be documented. With descriptions and images of original condition and details of what conservation treatments have been done to the object. These records accompany the conserved object and a copy kept by the conservator.
