THINGS WE HAVE BEEN DOING WITH THE PRINT! EXHIBITION

We kicked off with making some folders for the show with help from curators, artists and a work experience student.

Kaori tutoring Darcy and Volker in positioning labels onto the folders

Next came The Book of the Night when around 30 artists, writers, printers, designers and book makers got together to work through the night to make a book.

Early morning with the prints and texts displayed on the gallery wall

The prints have taken a while to dry but it is now PZ Conservation's job to bind together two books from the prints and texts.  We hope to do this the first week of June and then everyone  can get together and celebrate!

Another thing we helped  with was the display of artists books which are in the main exhibition area until the end of the show. These  include works by Ian Hamilton Finlay, Mandy Bonnell and Bryan Ingham.

We have also spent a week in the project space in the gallery, where we showed how books are sewn, the materials books are made from and how they are decorated.

Decorative papers were on show. Check out Shepherds http://www.falkiners.com/ if you want to buy some

We wanted as many people to have a go at sewing or threading simple books which they could then take away.

Using the brass finishing tools that are used to decorate book covers was also popular

Monika was able to show a group how to make single section books and decorate them

The results were pretty impressive!

Last weekend was the PRINT! symposium.  Very popular and great fun to be part of.  We gave a talk on  what needs to be considered when making an artist book such as grain direction, imposition, format, paper weight and different binding materials.

Goodness knows what I am doing here? Juggling?

Book artist supremo, Mandy Bonnell came down from London to talk about her process of making.  "I always want to work on big projects but I work to a small scale.  Making a book can accommodate this"

Thats all for today.  We will let you know when the Book of the Night is ready.

VISIT TO THE PORTHCURNO TELEGRAPH MUSEUM FOR A TOUR OF THE ARCHIVE COLLECTIONS: 4th MAY

A big thankyou to Charlotte Dando and Alan Renton for taking time out of their busy schedule to spend the afternooon with us. The Cable & Wireless archive contains historic material relating to the development of international communications business and technology, dating from the 1850's to the present day. These include corporate, staff and financial records, photographs, press cuttings, maps & charts, company periodicals paintings and objects. www.porthcurno.org.uk/page.php?id=60

We kicked off the visit with a working lunch al fresco!

This gave us lots of energy, which we needed as some of the books in the archive were huge!

Charlotte and Alan have worked hard to create an ordered and secure environment for the archive.

But there is still plenty of work to be done!

By the end of the afternoon Alan was completely exhausted!

Monika will be returning to the archive shortly to prepare condition reports and discuss conservation options for some key items in the archive.

Sadly this was the last week of Kaori's internship but we are delighted that she has secured a post as book conservator at the Herefordshire Record Office. We wish her all the best and hope that she will come back and see us soon.
